I wish I had created a business community on Face book in 2004. I wish I had a channel on Youtube in 2005. I am guilty of this as much as the other guy. I call it the coulda-woulda syndrome. However, I am a firm believer of the fact history repeats itself.
Yay- it’s 2016. The year of possibilities, Rio Olympics – Real Madrid won the Champions League. These market movements are going to show a social spike in engagement levels on social channels. And gen Y is in the epicentre of this. The beholders of the human race to come. By the way I am one of them. We question everything – If they can do it then Y can’t I – MANTRA is the fundamental unit of our DNA structure. We tend to procrastinate, live longer in our Parents house or at least visit them more often than any other generation. With the primary reason being a free feed, addition to mum’s washing basket and hogging the foxtel to watch the recent Main Event.
While we are doing or at least planning on doing all the above. Our attention spans are the shortest. We find ourselves closing social App on our phones and then reopening it within a second of closing them. I am guilty of this. We are in need of constant contextual content. Messaging our mates “Mate – Check out this meme!!”
The word of essence being CONTEXTUAL stimulation. Wherein we have a special connection with the subject matter. This can be a person, a place where we have been, animal we love, emotion driven – a Cat choke slams another cat makes me laugh. Or even an activity where I can be a part of something big.
To satisfy the “Contextual Content Stimulation” need SNAPCHAT was born. And the best thing is it’s not main stream as yet. That’s a green light for all hipsters, vegans, Soy decaf extra Hot piccolo lovers to get on board. SC says 60% of their users are between 13 to 35. For example – The e-commerce store I am co-founding in the Niche of baby products, has 60% (Ibis World)of its target population between 25 yrs to 40yrs. There is a massive overlap. So there is a high positive correlation between the people buying my stuff and the same people using funny lenses on SC.
Lenses is a great piece of innovation as it makes you feel a part of something huge. Like the batman mask lens which ran during the Premiere of Batman vs Superman. SC charges $500,000 USD on weekdays for lenses and $750,000 per lens for weekends and special holidays, according to Re/code.
Batman vs Superman – Ran the lenses and discovery adds for 24 hrs. This could have costed them $1.4M
The punch line being SC is small now but it’s all set to be huge. To all my fellow Coulda- Woulda syndrome sufferers. This is the History repeating itself. It’s the 2004 or 2006 equivalent of FB and Youtube.
